Can my landlord come after me for breaking my lease?
My roommate left me two weeks before the following happened. I was planning a trip for 10 days out of state and had just put my rent in the mail a week early so it was covered, I was making sure everything was locked up before I got on the plane and realized my back door had been kicked in. I was short on time so I grabbed what I could that was of value and left a friend with the keys to get the rest out that day. I called the landlord and told him what happened, he said we would figure it out once I returned. Upon my friend getting my stuff together he noticed that my lawnmower, tools, etc. were missing. When I returned from my trip the door was not fixed and I did not feel comfortable sleeping alone without some security (a locking door) so I decided to stay at my friends and have since decided that I do not want to return to that neighborhood. Now the landlord is saying that I broke the lease. What can he do and what does it usually cost if he decides to take me to court? I am in Florida.
