Help on SAT Critical Reading please?

I was just going through my workbook. I narrowed it down to two answers on one of the problems. Initially I wanted to answer "B)...who seeks a group oriented status" but instead chose "C)...who is a stereotypical pet owner." When I checked my answer, I found that my first guess, B, was actually correct. Why? "Because ETS likes to avoid controversy." So this got me thinking...I know there are lots of rules of thumb with the SAT...but maybe there are a few I don't know? I know you never pick the extreme answer...but you never pick the one that might be politically incorrect either?!?! If you know anymore tips, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
