Is it possible for me to legally own a gun permit in Georgia?

I was Convicted of Aggravated Battery in Florida when i was 12 in the juvenile courts. I'm about to join the air force reserves, I hear you don't need a license when your in the armed forces. Is this true? If the conviction is hindering is there any way to get it expunged, to where I can own a gun?
