Suggestions for replacing Windows Movie Maker with another editor?

I'm trying to make some fan videos like to put on you tube but my windows movie maker isn't working it keeps crashing so anyway i'm looking to replace using that program because i've given up on fixing it. I just want something similar to what it does something i but my videos in (avi format) and then add music and just make some fan videos again. i used to love doing it but WMM has gotten me so frustrated i gave it up so i just want some suggestions on programs right now i'm looking at power director a friend told me about it. Any other suggestions on programs similar to WMM but that do not have all the tech problems?
