Does it matter if an infant is baptized? Does it count? Or does the child have to decide for itself?

I have been raised a Catholic, but have put off getting my own children Baptized. I have been questioning the ethics of the Church for a number of years. My children go to a Catholic school (the same one I did), and my eldest is getting to be of age when First Communion takes place. My problem is, do I let him immerse into this Church or find another, eg Baptist etc, in order for him to decide to be Baptised for himself. I was watching the news this evening about how the RC church covered up and did not protect children who were abused, so I am very confused about what to do. If not the Church I was raised then which? I know it is just because I was raised RC that I am torn. HELP??
