What kind of haircut is good when you're trying to grow out your hair?

I currently have short hair, but the layers are long and it's getting to be a mullet in the back. Which I don't like. I want to let it grow out, but I can't keep it the way that it is. It looks horrible. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do?
